3. To help eliminate many of those last minute problems when relocating to a new
community consider the following:
____Contact the utility companies in your new city for information about fees or
deposits required. Indicate when and where you will want these services to begin.
____Have your refrigerator and other appliances that you are taking with you serviced
for the move.
_____Transfer your fire insurance on household goods or other insurance on personal
possessions, so they will be covered at your new home and while in transit.
____If applicable notify the principal of your childrens school about your intended
move. Obtain letter from principal covering the status of your children in school.
____Obtain all personal records on your entire family, such as birth, baptism, medical,
dental, school, marriage, current prescriptions, etc.
____Ask your doctor and dentist to recommend someone in your new hometown.
____Transfer your bank account. Arrange for sufficient cash or travelers checks to
cover the cost of moving services and other expenses.
____Have your moving expenses ready. ICC regulations require that your shipment
be paid for by cash, certified check or money order before it is unloaded.
____Empty and release your safety deposit box at the bank.
____Have your present bank arrange credit references for establishing new account in
the city to which you are moving.
____Return all library books.
____Return any items which you may have borrowed from friends, neighbors or
relatives.
____Drain fuel from power mowers and disconnect ignition wires.
____Make sure that you have picked up any items that may be at the cleaners, shoe
repair, in your lockers at clubs etc.
____Do not rush into selecting a moving company. Ask for references from friends or
relatives that have recently moved. Obtain estimates from several companies at
least one month in advance.
____You can save money by packing yourself. Be sure to use clean strong containers
and label their contents. If the moving company is going to pack for you be sure
to have your mover pack before moving day. Books may be shipped parcel post
to save money.
____Gather your personal items such as jewelry, currency, stamps and coin collections
and valuable personal records. These items should definitely be carried with you
personally and not packed.
____Pets need special care. The easiest way to ship a pet is to let a kennel do it for you.
When you take a pet on an airplane, a health certificate from your veterinarian is
needed. Tranquilizers are often recommended for air pressure. The certificate
should be written within 2 weeks of departure. For long cross-country car trips,
check hotels and motels in advance about their rules on pets.
____Label the cartons and furniture that you will need first on arrival so they will be
loaded last.
____Make sure your mover has telephone numbers and addresses where you may be
reached during the move and at your final destination. If you need to reach your
mover, you will find the name, address and telephone number on your copy of
the Bill of Lading.
4. At your new address:
____Check and sign the inventory of your shipment as it is unloaded and unpacked.
Make notations on the inventory list if any items are damaged and contact your
moving company.
____Be at your final destination so you can designate where each piece of furniture is
to be placed.
____Check on all utility services needed.
____Check with the Post Office for any mail being held for you and ask for delivery.
____Check requirements for auto registration and operators license.
____Visit City offices and register for voting.
____Locate your selected schools if applicable and register your children.
____Establish your medical and dental service for your family.
____Join local organizations to become acquainted with your new community
